Sleep by C.L. Taylor Book review

All Anna wants is to be able to sleep. But crushing insomnia, terrifying night terrors and memories of that terrible night are making it impossible. If only she didn’t feel so guilty…

To escape her past, Anna takes a job at a hotel on the remote Scottish island of Rum, but when seven guests join her, what started as a retreat from the world turns into a deadly nightmare.

Each of the guests have a secret but one of them is lying – about who they are and why they’re on the island. There’s a murderer staying in the Bay View hotel. And they’ve set their sights on Anna.

Seven strangers. Seven secrets. One deadly lie.

Someone’s going to sleep and never wake up…

This starts with an accident for which Anna, although not responsible for feels as if she is. It seems like someone else blames her as well and they start leaving her creepy messages. To escape her life and hopefully creepy stalker she runs away to the small Scottish island of Rum and takes a job in the hotel there. Unfortunately it soon becomes clear that the stalker seems to have followed her there and when her and 7 guests are trapped she needs to discover who it is before its too late.

This is another great book from C.L. Taylor. I love a book that makes you feel as if there is no escape and that’s exactly what this one does. Being trapped with nowhere to go with strangers when one of them is trying to kill you makes for an atmospheric thriller. Adding in the weather conditions and not being able to contact the outside world and you get a truly creepy setting. It feels very Agatha Christie, which I mean as a compliment, with people trapped together and someone stalking them one by one.

I liked Anna as a character. I liked that even though she was scared and she felt guilty and constantly tired from her insomnia that she didn’t give up. She still wanted to take care of her guests and try and discover who was stalking her.

Each one of the 7 guests is made to look like they could be Annas stalker and halfway through the book you think you’ve worked it out exactly and it throws you a twist that I definitely didn’t see coming. Each person has secrets that are revealed one by one until you are made aware of exactly who the stalker is. I never saw this one coming and I usually have at least an idea.

I absolutely recommend this one if you like a slightly twisty atmospheric thriller and being trapped with a stalker.
